RIP David Stewart (1947-2018)

Former Leeds United goalkeeper sadly passes away

It is with deep sadness that Leeds United have today learnt of the passing of former goalkeeper David Stewart, at the age of 71.

Signed from Ayr in October 1973 as backup for David Harvey, Stewart was known as a brave and terrific shot-stopper, making his debut against Wolves in the FA Cup.

When Harvey was injured in 1975, Stewart was undaunted, starting in goal against Anderlecht in the European Cup, before making what was considered his finest performance. Facing Barcelona in the semi-finals, Stewart kept both Johan Cruyff and Johan Neeskens at bay as Leeds reached the final.

After making inspirational saves throughout Leeds' 1974/75 European Cup run, Stewart took his place between the sticks for the infamous final, against Bayern Munich. The game ultimately ended with the German side winning 2-0, but the fixture is still sung about on the terraces home and away.

After Harvey regained fitness, Stewart deputised again before enjoying one final spell in 1977, a period in which he also won a cap for Scotland.

On leaving the club in 1979, Stewart would move to West Bromwich Albion, Swansea City and Hong Kong side Ryoden FC before retiring.

Our thoughts are with the family and friends of David.
