U23s Preview: Leeds United vs Sunderland

Premier League Cup action for the Whites.

Mark Jackson will take his Under-23s side to York City’s LNER Community Stadium on Wednesday evening, as they take on Sunderland Under-23s in the Premier League Cup (19:00)

This Group E fixture will be the fourth match of the competition for Leeds, and the fifth game for visitors, Sunderland. The Whites up to now have won once and lost twice, taking three points last time out on home turf against Mansfield Town.

The Black Cats come into the game with just the one win from their four games, which was at the Stadium of Light back in October when they ran out 2-1 winners over Jackson’s side. Mike Dodds and Michael Proctor’s team are sat third in the standings at the moment, a point ahead of United having played a game more.

Leeds haven’t been in action since a goalless Premier League 2 draw with Everton in before Christmas, and will now be looking to get three points on Wednesday evening, which could take them up to second in the group.

The cup competition as a whole is split into eight groups of four teams, where each team within the group will play one another home and away. From there, the top two teams will progress into the knockout stages of the competition which are all one-off knockout ties, with extra-time and penalties if needed.

The current holders of the Premier League Cup are Everton, who were crowned champions in 2018/19. For the last two years, the the competition has either been curtailed or hasn’t taken place, due to the pandemic.
